Power Systems Laboratory Degradation-limiting Optimization of Battery Energy Storage Systems Operation

چکیده

In this thesis, a semi-empirical lithium-ion battery capacity degradation model is developed. The basic form of the model is developed from previous theoretical studies, then experimental data of Lithium Manganese Oxide (LMO) batteries are used to calibrate the model and to calculate coefficients. Based on the developed degradation model, Li-Ion Battery Energy Storage System’s (BESS) value in providing frequency regulation are assessed. Two frequency control scenarios, primary frequency control (PFC) in the continental European power system, and dynamic frequency regulation in the PJM Interconnection, US are studied. Simulations are performed for both scenarios with historical profiles and various BESS control methods, and operation revenues are estimated using the developed capacity degradation function and available market data.
